In this post, we will specify which items from the FinOps Foundation framework are addressed on SavingCosts.cloud, as well as explain why we only partially cover the framework.
It’s important to note that SavingCosts.cloud has no affiliation with the FinOps Foundation. This institution has been a pioneer in this field and a leader in providing cost control practices for cloud providers, significantly contributing to this sector in recent years. However, we acknowledge that the framework has been expanding and evolving. Therefore, many topics within the framework will not be covered here on SavingCosts, as they are not our primary focus. We view the framework as a means to an end – cloud cost reduction – rather than an end in itself.
Nonetheless, all content on our site can be utilized by companies whether they use the FinOps Framework or not.
That said, the focus of SavingCosts.cloud is to create content that helps reduce costs in a clear, transparent, quick and simple manner. We believe that with this approach, companies, through their people rather than processes, can achieve significant savings.
Below is a schematic image from FinOps illustrating their framework:
On SavingCosts.cloud, we will cover the items highlighted in green.
We believe these items are essential and sufficient for a company to start its cloud cost reduction efforts. Therefore, we will create content that relates to these green-highlighted items. The other items are not a priority for us at this moment. Some of them are not part of our mission, while others we consider to be excessive or conflicting. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the immense value of the FinOps Foundation’s framework.
For example, “Teams need to collaborate.” This is obviously true, but why is this highlighted as a principle in the framework? Perhaps it is because implementing the framework involves many people and interactions, and collaboration needs to be explicitly stated. At SavingCosts, our content is created so that individuals can read it and start implementing cost-saving measures without the need for extensive interactions or processes. We believe in this approach, though we hope teams will still collaborate! 😊
Forecasting, budgeting, unit metrics, unit economics, commitment discounts, licensing, business value, among other topics, will not be covered in-depth on our site, though they may be approached superficially.
